AIR POLLUTION

Schouwen-Duiveland has one of the lowest concentrations of NO2 (13.9) on average after Veere, even though the concentration is slightly increasing. Particulate matter (PM10) or fine dust concerns particles smaller than 10 micrometres.

Schouwen-Duiveland has mostly ‘good’ air quality. Only in Zierikzee there are sometimes values measured that indicate a ‘poor’ quality of the air due to ozone concentration.

Everywhere else in the municipality the air quality is considered satisfactory and air pollution poses little to no risk.
 Low NO2 and pm10 in Zeeland
Concentrations of NO2 and PM10 in Zeeland are considerably lower than in the provinces of Brabant and Zuid-Holland. Specifically the coastal areas appear to have the best air quality. 

BATHING WATER QUALITY

The European Environment Agency collects information on the water quality at bathing water points. Based on the classification made in the EU Bathing Water Directive, EEA gives an indication if a bathing water point is ‘poor’, ‘sufficient’, ‘good’ or ‘excellent’.  Methodological evaluation of bathing water quality is limited to certain areas in the world. Seven monitoring stations around the coast of Schouwen-Duiveland are monitoring the quality of the bathing water.

CLIMATE

The ocean affects the weather conditions at Schouwen-Duiveland. With a temperate maritime climate summers are generally pleasant with very changeable periods, but excessively hot weather is rare. Winters can be quite cold and dark with the possibility of some snow.

Best time to visit
The best time of the year to go outside or visit Schouwen-Duiveland for warm-weather activities is from late June to early September.
Little to no rain
 The summer months of June, July and August have the lowest amount of rainy days and the most pleasant temperatures year round.
Presence of wind
Wind speed is lower than during the rest of the year, which also adds to a pleasant outdoor experience, especially at the coastal areas in Schouwen-Duiveland.

ALTITUDE

Most of Schouwen-Duiveland consists of flat terrain and it is suitable for everyone arriving. The highest point of Schouwen-Duiveland is situated at the dune area in the western part, which is 34 meters above sea level. The minimum altitude is -5.2 meters below sea level, which is around Moriaanshoofd.

Suitable for outdoor activities 
The predominantly flat terrain of Schouwen-Duiveland makes it highly suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.
No steep trails
The lack of steepness makes the foot trails and cycling paths usable by walkers and cyclists with different levels of fitness and skill and different types of bicycles.
Nature walks
Visitors looking for hilly spots could consider visiting the western part of the island which consist of a vast sand dune landscape.

The dashboard output stemmed from the creation of a Destination Benchmarking Report (DBR) using data from a variety of open source databases that are partly aggregated in a dataset generated in 2020 by Wageningen University and Research in the framework of the SASTDes project.
