Visitors are encouraged to choose eco-friendly activities, such as cycling along the lake’s renowned bike path and exploring the area on foot or by electric boat, reducing their carbon footprint. Sustainable tourism products and services are widely available, and low-carbon facilities have been developed to support a clean and accessible environment. Through community-led environmental education, the destination raises awareness about the impacts of climate change, aiming to inspire locals and travellers to protect this beautiful region for future generations.

Good Practice Story

Single-us plastics are a serious threat to the environment worldwide. With tea being a big attraction in the destination, which is commonly distributed in single-use cups, the destination decided to tackle this problem in an innovative approach. To encourage the use of reusable cups, cup rental stations were set up with the possibility to check availability and track the footprint of the cup on the phone through an app. Free Drinking Water stations were also set up to reduce plastic water bottles additionally to awareness campaign to raise general awareness of waste reduction.

Nature & Wildlife

This scenic area is surrounded by lush forests and scenic hills, ideal for hiking, cycling, and birdwatching. Sun Moon Lake’s bikeway is an internationally celebrated trail, and the lake itself is a haven for eco-friendly boating and kayaking. The area is part of the central mountain range, where trails lead through dense forests and up panoramic viewpoints. Visitors can also take a cable car ride to get an aerial view of the stunning lake and mountains or explore nearby wildlife habitats that are home to diverse flora and fauna, including migratory birds and endemic species.

Getting There

Located in central Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is easily accessible from major cities. From Taipei or Taichung, visitors can take the Taiwan High-Speed Rail (THSR) to Taichung, followed by a bus ride directly to the lake. There are also local bus services from Taichung’s main train station, as well as shuttle buses and private car hire options for greater flexibility. For a scenic route, some travellers opt to take the nostalgic Jiji railway line from Taichung, adding to the experience by journeying through Taiwan’s countryside.

Getting Around

Sun Moon Lake’s bike path and walking trails make exploring the area on foot or by bicycle a popular choice. Bike rentals are readily available and recommended for a low-carbon travel experience around the lake. Public buses and shuttle services provide convenient access to main attractions, while boat tours offer a peaceful way to experience the lake and visit key sites. For a unique perspective, visitors can take the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway, a scenic cable car that connects the lake with the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, adding a cultural dimension to the natural beauty.

Increase in public transportation routes has created greater convenience for visitors from Sun Moon Lake to other destinations. The well thought out public transit schedule is more attractive than driving, thereby avoiding traffic congestion and difficulty in parking. In addition, tour itineraries lead visitors to understand the local ecosystems, ways of life, and traditions which increases concern for their preservation.
