Bago City was struggling to position itself in the tourism market until the local Tourism and Agriculture agencies launched the “Booming GREEN AGritOurism” (BAGO) program which includes Farm Tours, Farmers’ Weekend Market, and Gastronomy Tourism. These initiatives have positioned Bago City as a prime agritourism destination in the Philippines, recognized for its extraordinary agroecological biodiversity and exemplary environmental practices.
Nature’s Village Resort is a great example that sustainability is not only good for the environment but also has positive financial gains. By leading the hotel operations by 5R principles: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Repurpose the resort has proven that sustainable practices in hotel operations are not only good for the environment but also help to reduce operational costs thereby increasing revenues.
Sagay Marine Reserve now has one of the most important marine conservation programs in the Philippines. However, more than fifty years ago the reserve’s territory was suffering from poor illegal fishing practices that led to the widespread destruction of marine resources. To protect marine biodiversity a series of capacity-building and livelihood programs for fisherfolk were created. Now they have transformed into sea guardians and together with the local residents practice community-based eco-tourism.
This is a story about how a modest community-led tree-planting activity that started 19 years ago to shield the coastal community from monsoon winds and waves, has now grown into Sipalay City’s Green Belt Eco Park and Critical Habitat (Green BEaCH) initiative that tackles the local impact of the global climate crisis. This project has transformed into an urban greenbelt zone, providing a community eco-park for residents, a sustainable livelihood through ecotourism, and a sanctuary for endangered marine turtles and local and migratory birds.

“Brazil is a worldwide known hotspot for biodiversity as well as home to a multitude of cultural expressions. The natural and cultural heritage and immense variety of tourism experiences in the country are valuable assets for its competitiveness. Yet, as we envision a post Covid-19 era, sustainability in tourism becomes crucial to build resilience and guarantee the long-lasting health of Brazil’s ecosystems and well-being of the hosting communities. This would also ensure an active contribution of the country’s tourism sector to the Sustainable Development Goals.”
