Since 2016, the region has been home to the Southwest Coast Salt Fields and Wetlands Environmental Education Center, which focuses on environmental education and ecotourism, fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the local ecology. This centre, certified in 2015 and renewed through 2025, serves as a hub for learning and engagement with the area’s unique wetland ecology and saltpan landscapes. Additionally, the scenic area emphasises low-carbon tourism by hosting annual cycling and slow travel events, which encourage low-impact travel options. Further enhancing its sustainable tourism credentials, the area has successfully trained 32 cycling tour guides since 2022, including 17 local tourism operators, thus promoting community involvement and sustainable practices within the tourism industry.
