Sustainability
The Democratic Republic of the Congo plays a vital role in global environmental stability. It holds a significant share of the Congo Basin rainforest, the second largest tropical rainforest in the world and one of the planet’s most important carbon sinks. Around 13% of the country is protected, safeguarding extraordinary biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth. Sustainability is closely tied to conservation and community resilience. Tourism is largely centred on these protected landscapes, creating opportunities in guiding, hospitality, and small scale enterprise, with the potential to strengthen local livelihoods while helping safeguard ecosystems that are both globally significant and environmentally fragile.
Tourism & People
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, daily life is shaped by strong community ties and vibrant cultural expression. Music, storytelling, markets, and shared public spaces reflect traditions closely connected to land, rivers, and collective identity, while hospitality is often experienced through everyday interactions and spontaneous conversation that foster genuine human connection. Tourism remains an emerging sector but increasingly supports local livelihoods, particularly around protected areas, and cultural centres. Guiding, small-scale accommodation, transport, crafts, and food related activities link visitors with local economies, while community involvement plays an essential role in preserving cultural heritage and ensuring tourism contributes positively to both people and place.
Travel in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is best experienced at a slower pace. Allow time for observation, spontaneous moments, and the simple act of enjoying landscapes, sounds, and everyday life as it unfolds naturally. Staying longer and supporting local businesses can deepen connections while contributing positively to communities and local livelihoods.
Visitors from most countries must obtain a visa prior to arrival, as visa on arrival is generally not available for tourism. Travellers should apply in advance via the official e-visa portal. A yellow fever vaccination is mandatory at least 10 days before travel.
French is the official language, while Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and Tshiluba are widely spoken across the country. English may be understood in tourism settings, but learning a few basic French greetings or communicating with patience and openness can greatly enrich everyday interactions.
Nature & Wildlife
The Democratic Republic of the Congo hosts some of the planet’s most intact ecosystems, where dense rainforest, wetlands, volcanic landscapes, and the African Great Lakes region create habitats of global ecological importance. The country is home to remarkable wildlife, including bonobos, okapi, and eastern lowland gorillas, species that highlight its exceptional biodiversity and conservation significance. Its protected area network, including Africa’s oldest national park, Virunga National Park, reflects ongoing efforts to safeguard these environments through habitat protection, scientific research, and community supported conservation initiatives that contribute to both ecosystem preservation and local livelihoods.
